KBase Systems Biology — Free workshop this Wednesday!

The Bioinformatics Core and Shields Library are Hosting a Free KBase Systems Biology Workshop on Wednesday, September 20!

KBase is a free, open source systems biology analysis software and data platform designed for both bench biologists and bioinformaticians. KBase operates on all prokaryotes and a variety of eukaryotes including fungi and plants, integrating a large variety of public data and tools into an easy-to-use graphical user interface.

KBase enables users to upload their own data, analyze it alongside collaborator and public data, build increasingly realistic models, and share workflows and conclusions. Users do not need to access them from numerous sources or learn multiple systems in order to perform sophisticated systems biology analyses.

To register for this workshop, go to https://registration.genomecenter.ucdavis.edu/.

Where is the workshop?

The KBase workshop will be held at the Shields Library and will run from 10am to 3:15pm on September 20th.There will be a lunch break from 11:45am to 1pm (on your own). Attendance is limited to 40 participants in order to foster an effective learning environment and ensure sufficient one-on-one attention.

What will I learn?

Attendees will learn how to use their KBase account, navigate through the user interface, upload their own data, and analyze it within KBase. This workshop will focus on analyses for microbes and microbial communities, including a rich collection of bioinformatics tools for quality control and assessment of reads, de novo assembly, prokaryotic genome annotation, and how to analyze structural and functional features of genomes within KBase.

Who should attend?

Students, postdocs, technicians, and researchers looking for free tools to analyze their data with a graphical user interface tied to a supercomputing backend. Anyone from bench biologists to bioinformaticians is welcome to attend and learn about how KBase can help in their research.

What are the prerequisites?

Please sign up for a free KBase account at http://kbase.us/sign-up-for-a-kbase-account/ so you will be ready to follow along in the hands-on portion of the workshop. Then register to attend the workshop at https://registration.genomecenter.ucdavis.edu/.

What do I need to bring?

Plan to bring your laptop running Chrome for the best experience. If you have prokaryotic NGS reads or assembly files that you want to analyze in KBase, you are encouraged to have these files readily accessible.

Who can I contact with questions about the workshop content?
